Loch Tay sits in the middle of one of Scotland’s most varied stretches of countryside. Within twenty minutes of the loch you can be at the foot of a Munro, in a working distillery, on a 4×4 hilltop drive, in a chocolatier’s tasting room or watching white tailed sea eagles from the bank. Within an hour you can be on the West Highland Way, in Pitlochry for the theatre, or at the Crannog Centre for a slightly different kind of history lesson.
Most guests use their first day on the loch itself. There are kayak, canoe and paddleboard hires at Kenmore, a safari cruise that runs the length of the loch, and easier walks along the shoreline that work even on a slow day. Bike hire is straightforward at Killin and the National Cycle Network runs through the area.
On the walking front, Ben Lawers and the Munros to the north are the headline routes, but the lower walks around Killin, Acharn (the Birks of Acharn and the waterfall above the boathouses) and the Glen Lyon road are arguably more rewarding for shorter stays. For the wetter days, the Dewar’s Aberfeldy Distillery, the Highland Chocolatier in Grandtully, the Crannog Centre and the Scottish Crannog Centre rebuild project are all under cover and well worth a visit.
